NaPodPoMo 2010 #2 – My Podcast Empire

So for show #2 I pulled out all the domain names that I’ve been hording. I’ve decided that the time is right to create my podcast empire. Work is slow, so ones mind turns to other things like, what am I gonna do for the next 20 years. I enjoy design, but my passion is talking into the mic and creating content. I’ve been doing it since May 2005 on the Razing Giants podcast and then with Fat Guy Radio and most recently, the last 3 years, with Fat 2 Fit Radio. Obviously more shows is the answer, so that’s what I’m going to do. More shows. Here is the list of domain names that represent the shows I’d like to do.

greentechnica.com – Green tech, news and products that save you some green
kringlecast.com – The venerable Santa Claus podcast for the season

National Podcast Post Month is imminent. Starting November 1st through the end of November I’ll be producing a podcast a day. Some will be good, others not so much. Look for more of the Kringle Cast and a lot of the Last Word In Tech.

Running Again

I’m going to try running again. A few months ago I started a Couch to 5K program. I ended up hurting my knee. Part of it was definitely my weight. But, the other part, and I’m thinking the more important contributing factor, was my technique. I was listening to the 4 Feet Running podcast and Dan mentioned forefoot running. Add this tidbit to the article that I reported about on Fat 2 Fit Radio about barefoot running and you get that I know squat about proper running technique. A quick Google search later and I found a great video explaining heel strike technique and forefoot running. It’s more than just what part of the foot strikes the pavement. I’m going to attempt to get back on the road on my “off days” working out.

I’ve been bitten more than once in the last few months when I’ve upgraded my WordPress installation. I need to make sure that any update doesn’t break the blog. Here on Running in Flip Flops it’s not too terribly important, but on Fat 2 Fit Radio, it’s of utmost importance. Therefore you get his post.

The song is from a band called Alva Star and the song is called Unhappily Yours.

Geoff Smith just released his latest album, Ones and Os. He did so by using his excellent service Ringtone Feeder. You get the songs, bonus material and an RSS feed that gets you more content in the future. Sweet deal.

The eldest son sits down to record some Turley Family Podcast goodness. Holy crap! He’s hearing and seeing some adult stuff at that elementary school of his. In this one he tells us the story of Austin and Zoey sitting in a tree, k-i-s-s-i-n-g. Good stuff, including wrapping tongues.

The Return of Razing Giants

Starting in May of 2005, until the unintended final show in December 2006, I did a music podcast called Razing Giants. It was a “weekly” podcast, and I use the term weekly very loosely. When I started my next podcast, Fat Guy Radio, Razing Giants suffered until it finally died. Apparently I can only do one weekly podcast at a time while having a full time job, a wife and 4 kids. I continued to play a song a the end of each episode of Fat Guy Radio, but now with the newer podcast, Fat 2 Fit Radio, we’re more focused on the content, so no music. So with all that in mind, I am proud to announce the return of the Razing Giants podcast.

I’m going to play pretty much any music that I like, instead of being boxed into any particular genre. It’s also not going to be only a music podcast. It’s going to be a sort of variety show of anything that I like and want to talk about. I’m planning on having as many of my friends that I can on the show and talking about anything and everything I can think of.

I’m going to be using the technology in the Podpress plugin to allow “category casting”. We’ll see how that works. I’ve never used it before. Shows will show up whenever, don’t count on any particular schedule. In the meanwhile, check out the archives of the old Razing Giants podcast. There are no show notes there any more, so don’t look, but the MP3 files are there for the listening from the site or subscribing to download the individual episodes.

The Project: Podcast Directory

I’ve had a bug in my bonnet to create a web application with Python/Django.

I started this blog, under a different name, to get me started learning Python. That didn’t work so well, but the one thing that it did get me excited about is Django. I would like to build something in Django, I need a project. That’s the way most things get done in my life, publicly state that I’m going to build something and then make it happen. The project is a podcast directory.

I’m a podcaster. I have had a podcast of some sort for the last 3 years. The latest one is Fat 2 Fit Radio. As I’ve tried to promote the podcast, I’ve been surprised at the crappiness of the podcast directories out there. There are a bunch of them, but none are great. The idea is create a podcast directory that is super simple, lists podcasts by topic, separate video and audio podcasts, and generally make it a place to find and not subscribe to podcasts. Subscribing is better done on an aggregator.

I’m going to be repurposing one of my domain names to get this project going. The domain name is podcastersfriend.com. Previously/currently it is a WordPress blog with some pages of audio equipment that a podcaster might be interested in. I’ll probably add these pages to the new site, but for now it will be going bye-bye.

So there it is. A podcast directory written with Django. I’ll chronicle the progress, post code, and generally solicit help from anyone reading these posts.
