A couple things come to mind when Veterans Day comes around.  One is that in my family, my generation is the first that did not have at least one person in the military.  I often look back and regret that I did not serve my country in that way.  When I do hear of old or new friends that have served in the military, I hold them in high esteem.  They chose to put their life on hold to serve the country in which they live and that is something special.

When you meet someone that was/is a member of our armed forces be sure to thank them.  Five simple words, “Thank you for your service.

Thanks to my friends and family that have served!

And now, cheesy songs by country singers.

Couch to 5K Update

2 Nov
2009

The second day of NaPodPoMo brings a Couch to 5K update.  Week 5 is starting tomorrow and it’s the week that undid my knee the last time I tried this program.  This program can be found over at Coolrunning.com.  For those great running podcasts check out the post I made a few days ago.

Here’s what I’ll be doing this week:

Day One:

  • Jog 1/2 mile (or 5 minutes)
  • Walk 1/4 mile (or 3 minutes)
  • Jog 1/2 mile (or 5 minutes)
  • Walk 1/4 mile (or 3 minutes)
  • Jog 1/2 mile (or 5 minutes)

Day Two:

  • Jog 3/4 mile (or 8 minutes)
  • Walk 1/2 mile (or 5 minutes)
  • Jog 3/4 mile (or 8 minutes)

Day Three:

  • Jog two miles (or 20 minutes) with no walking.

Also, AudioBoo.fm will be my recording solution of choice for the non-music podcasts for NaPodPoMo. Recording with the iPhone is so easy with this program. Automatic uploading. What could be easier. Well, actually it would be easier if AudioBoo actually made this post from their service like Utterli does, but beggars, choosers and all.

Talk to you tomorrow!

So the weekend from hell is now over. Let’s go over the crappy stuff that happened to me this weekend.

  1. My car was broken into and my GPS was stolen.
  2. I couldn’t go to work waiting for the crime scene unit of the police department to show up.
  3. The guy who fixed my broken window put 4 dents in my door that cracked the clear coat.
  4. My battery died and I had to replace it.

Luckily there were bright points to all this.  In between all this Halloween happened and I got more than one compliment on how much the children loved our house decorations.  I really had a good time setting it up.  I now see why people go through the trouble each Halloween.

Talk to you tomorrow!

napodpomo1National Podcast Post Month is imminent. Starting November 1st through the end of November I’ll be producing a podcast a day. Some will be good, others not so much.  Look for more of the Kringle Cast and a lot of the Last Word In Tech.

Here are the important links to bookmark:

  • NaPodPoMo.org – the social network over at Ning where you can sign up and be a part of the craziness. You can also get your feed in the collective feed for everyone signed up. Not everything is for everyone, but it’s fun to sample and hear someone you might not normally encounter.
  • NaPodPoMo.com – will take you to my category here on this website.

If you have any questions about how to create a podcast, be sure to check out my podcasting site, The Podcast Studio. Or, if you are interested in recording an episode or more with me, leave a comment below or send a message through Facebook.

Save Balloon Chicken

I've been up here for two weeks and no one gives a rat's ass!

A while back, I asked for opinions on a couple important topics.  #1, Which 80’s Heather did you find most attractive?  This one will have to go unresolved.  It is probably more accurate to say 50% of you are wrong!

80sheathers

Poll #2 asked your opinions on Van Halen lead singers.  I thought I could guess the outcome, but I was indeed wrong.  The power of Diamond Dave winning as the best front man for Van Halen was obvious.  But, I did not see Sammy Hagar only garnering 53% of the vote for Best Music by Van Halen during his tenure as lead singer.  That one shocks me.

C25K Podcasts

Barefoot Running ImageAs part of my latest endeavor going from the couch to running a 5k  race I’m using one of the many podcasts that are available on the subject.  Most of these podcasts are based on the Couch to 5K running program from Coolrunning.com.

I think the first one that I heard of, and still extremely popular, is Podcasts for Running by Robert Ullrey.  This was the podcast that I used previously on my last effort to start running.  I blamed my failure on the aggressiveness of this podcast when it was probably my weight along with my poor running technique that caused my knee injury and dropping the running.  These podcasts were produced in 2006 and are truly timeless.

This time I am expanding my musical horizons with Suz’s Couch to 5K program.  She was inspired by Podcasts for Running and uses the same program.  Instead of the wordless techno of the Ullrey podcasts, Suz uses hip-hop and 80’s music.  I’ve completed week 1 and just did the first week 2 run and I learned a couple things on week 2.  Kanye West shared “Now I ain’t sayin’ she a gold digger, but she ain’t messin’ wit no broke niggaz.” and I learned via The Black Eyed Peas that I need to “get retarded”.  Very enlightening.

Another popular version was created by DJ Steve Boyett over at Podrunner.com.  He calls his First Day to 5K and it’s part of his Podrunner Intervals series.  There are also two follow up programs called Gateway to 8K and Freeway to 10K.  Unlike the previous two, the Podrunner podcasts don’t contain any voices.  The cues are ascending and descending tones to let you know when to kick it up or slow it down.  As Steve explained, this was to make the podcasts compatible with non-English speaking countries.  Good idea.

One last one that just came to my attention is being produced right now at Runningmatemedia.com.  When I first tweeted about starting my C25K program again, I received a reply to check it out.  I have not listened to these completely yet, and will definitely do so in trying to mix up my running.  These are currently being produced and can be found over at Podomatic.

That’s it for now.

Be Safe on Facebook

5 Oct
2009

Do you know when something just isn’t quite right?  You’re walking in a parking lot and feel like someone’s following you?  You’re jogging in the park and think someone is about to jump out and mug you?  How about online?  You hop on your favorite social network and someone you know starts a weird chat with you.  Doesn’t seem the same?   Recently I was contacted by someone that I know on Facebook and immediately I know her account had been hacked.  I wasn’t chatting with the person that I thought I was.   Turns out her account was being used to get money out of people she knows.  Fortunately that hacker decided to chat with me instead of someone more trusting, or less online savvy.

One

It starts out very innocently with a “Hi.”, then it turns into a hard luck story.  These scam artists have to be related to the guy that hits you up in the parking lot “tryin’ to put together a dollar”.  He’s trying to get back to his half way house in LA and just needs bus fare.  Meanwhile he’s asked you every other day for bus fare and he’s too screwed up to remember he already tried his BS on you.  Also “Nope aside that am having problem to sorting out hotel bills.”?  Really?  At least learn a little bit more English.

2

And there it is.  She/he needs $870 to “sorting out hotel bills.” and of course they want it through Nigerian and other scam artists’ best friend, Western Union.

3

I was actually genuine in my response.  How would I send someone money through Western Union?  I have never done it.  I never will, but that’s beside the point.  Of course they’re all too happy to step me through the steps.

4

At this point I’m done.  I started this exchange when checking email and Facebook before I hit the road home.  This hacker/con artist has now taken up enough of my time.  I was immediately unfriended/blocked from the friend’s profile.  If not I could have written on her wall or what I actually tried to do, get her email address.  I did end up finding her with my wife’s Facebook account, contacting her husband and let her know what was happening.

So, be careful on Facebook.  I had heard about this scam before, though I’d only heard of it tried on motherly or grandmotherly type from their fake children or grandchildren.  The most important thing to take away from this is never send anyone money through Western Union.  It is always a scam.  Trust your instincts if something doesn’t feel right.

Be safe.

Running Again

29 Sep
2009

I’m going to try running again. A few months ago I started a Couch to 5K program. I ended up hurting my knee. Part of it was definitely my weight. But, the other part, and I’m thinking the more important contributing factor, was my technique. I was listening to the 4 Feet Running podcast and Dan mentioned forefoot running. Add this tidbit to the article that I reported about on Fat 2 Fit Radio about barefoot running and you get that I know squat about proper running technique. A quick Google search later and I found a great video explaining heel strike technique and forefoot running. It’s more than just what part of the foot strikes the pavement. I’m going to attempt to get back on the road on my “off days” working out.

Wish me luck!
