Apparently Elvira is still around, doing her thing. Her thing? Elvira’s Movie Macabre is back on the air on a station near you. It’s her late night monster/horror movie show that she hosts. I used to watch it all the time. It’s running on Saturday nights in the Los Angeles area on Channel 56.1.

I Had A Skate Bike

Who had one of these? No one?

I was reminded today of the Max Skate Bike. My dad came home from work with one of these one day. Apparently someone was riding one of these down in Belmont Shore where his barber shop was located. They probably sold them at Jones Bicycle, which is why that day he came home with it.

It was at a time that I was looking to get an upgrade on my regular BMX style bike, rather than something new and weird. Looking back, it was weird, but it was really fun as well. I’d like one right now to scoot around the neighborhood, down to the corner mailbox or follow the little one around the block on their bikes rather than getting my own bike out for just that small bit of riding.

A while back, I asked for opinions on a couple important topics. #1, Which 80′s Heather did you find most attractive? This one will have to go unresolved. It is probably more accurate to say 50% of you are wrong!

Poll #2 asked your opinions on Van Halen lead singers. I thought I could guess the outcome, but I was indeed wrong. The power of Diamond Dave winning as the best front man for Van Halen was obvious. But, I did not see Sammy Hagar only garnering 53% of the vote for Best Music by Van Halen during his tenure as lead singer. That one shocks me.

Little Known Naval History

The U.S.S. Constitution (Old Ironsides), as a combat vessel, carried 48,600 gallons of fresh water for her crew of 475 officers and men. This was sufficient to last six months of sustained operations at sea. She carried no evaporators (i.e. fresh water distillers!) .

However, let it be noted that according to her ship’s log, “On July 27, 1798, the U.S.S. Constitution sailed from Boston with a full complement of 475 officers and men, 48,600 gallons of fresh water, 7,400 cannon shot, 11,600 pounds of black powder and 79,400 gallons of rum.”

Her mission: “To destroy and harass English shipping.”

Making Jamaica on 6 October, she took on 826 pounds of flour and 68,300 gallons of rum.

Then she headed for the Azores, arriving there 12 November. She provisioned with 550 pounds of beef and 64,300 gallons of Portuguese wine.

On 18 November, she set sail for England. In the ensuing days she defeated five British men-of-war and captured and scuttled 12 English merchant ships, salvaging only the rum aboard each.

By 26 January, her powder and shot were exhausted. Nevertheless, although unarmed she made a night raid up the Firth of Clyde in Scotland. Her landing party captured a whiskey distillery and transferred 40,000 gallons of single malt Scotch aboard by dawn. Then she headed home.

The U.S.S. Constitution arrived in Boston on 20 February, 1799, with no cannon shot, no food , no powder, no rum, no wine, no whiskey, and 38,600 gallons of water.
